Wikipedia gives the following definition: “Generic drug (pl. generic drugs, short: generics) is a drug which is produced and distributed without a brand name. A generic must contain the same active ingredients as the original formulation. In most cases, it is considered bioequivalent to the brand name counterpart with respect to pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties. By extension, therefore, generics are assumed to be identical in dose, strength, route of administration, safety, efficacy, and intended use.”
Usually there is no significant difference. But there might be minor aspects which are different, of course. In order for you to know the difference, we have created the following table:
Whether a manufacturer makes branded drugs or generic drugs, the standards are the same. The ingredients are the key element of the whole drug. The ingredient in the drug that cures you or makes you feel better, is called the "medicinal" or an active ingredient. While both generic and brand name drugs must have the same amounts of good quality medicinal ingredients, other ingredients might differ between branded and generic drugs.
As the active ingredient is the same, the effect produced by generic drugs and the branded drugs is identical.
Generic medications cannot be manufactured under brand names as it would be a copyright infringement case. That is why generics are usually named after their active ingredients.
Shape of pills is also copyrighted by brand, thus the shape of generic pills has to be different from that of the original branded medications
Color of pills is also copyrighted, thus the color of generic pills is different from the one of the original brand
Generic medications are considerably cheaper than brand name drugs.
The main reason for the reduced price of generic medicines is that the creation of a generic drug costs significantly less and therefore a lower price can be offered while still maintaining profitability.
Manufacturers of generic drugs are mainly able to avoid the following three costs that brand name pharmaceutical companies incur:
- (1) costs associated with the research and development of the drug;
- (2) costs associated with obtaining regulatory approval (i.e. proving safety and efficiency of a drug);
- (3) marketing costs.
First, Generic manufacturers do not incur the cost of drug discovery and instead reverse-engineer existing brand name drugs to allow them to manufacture bioequivalent versions.
Second, generic manufacturers do not bear the burden of proving the safety and efficiency of the drugs through clinical trials - rather, generic manufacturers must prove the generic drug’s bioequivalancy to the existing drug.
Third, these companies receive the large benefit of the marketing and advertising that goes into the promotion of the original branded drug. The brand name drug has to prove itself for the consumers, generic ones do not. The drugs that generic manufacturers sell have already been on the market for at least a decade or more and do not need additional advertising. For the same reason, generic manufacturers very rarely give away free samples to promote their products. The significant research, development and marketing costs incurred by the large pharmaceutical companies during the introduction of a new drug to the market is often cited as the reason for the high cost of new medications - they have to pay off these costs and make a profit before the patent expires. Generic manufacturers do not incur these costs, with bioequivalence testing and manufacturing costs significantly lower, thus being able to charge significantly less for generic medication compared to the costs of branded ones.

Sustained-release (SR), extended-release (ER, XR, or XL), time-release or timed-release, controlled-release (CR), or continuous-release (CR or Contin) pills are tablets or capsules formulated to dissolve slowly and release drug over time. The advantages of sustained-release tablets or capsules are that they can often be taken less frequently than instant-release formulations of the same drug, and that they keep steadier levels of the drug in the bloodstream. Sustained-release tablets are formulated so that the active ingredient is embedded in a matrix of insoluble substance (various: some acrylics, even chitin, these are often patented) so that the dissolving drug has to find its way out through the holes in the matrix. In some SR formulations the matrix physically swells up to form a gel, so that the drug has first to dissolve in matrix, then exit through the outer surface.
There are certain considerations for the formation of sustained release formulation:
- If the active compound has a long half-life (over six hours), it is sustained on its own.
- If the pharmacological activity of the active compound is not related to its blood levels, time releasing has no purpose then.
- If the absorption of the active compound involves an active transport, the development of a time-release product may be problematic.
- Finally, if the active compound has a short half-life, it would require a large amount to maintain both prolonged and effective dose. In this case, a broad therapeutic window is necessary to avoid toxicity; otherwise, the risk is unwarranted and another mode of administration would be recommended.
The difference between controlled release and sustained release is that controlled release is a perfectly zero order release; that is, the drug releases over time irrespective of concentration. Sustained release implies slow release of the drug over a time period. It may or may not be controlled release.
